From 25–28 August 2025, the Church Transformation Network (CTN), in collaboration with the Association of Evangelical Alliances (AEA), convened in South Africa for a strategic planning and regional partnership consultation. The gathering brought together church leaders, mission practitioners, and development partners to strengthen collaboration in equipping African church leaders for the Great Commission and the Great Commandment.
The consultation highlighted Africa’s emerging role as a global missionary hub, preparing to send workers across the world to share the Gospel. The meeting was officially opened by Rev. Dr. Master, who also presented key statistical insights emphasizing the urgent need for investment in church human capital development. He underscored that Africa presents immense opportunities for both the church and development partners when they work together to equip leaders.
Dr. Habtamu Umer, President of CTN, introduced Dr. Jerry Rueb, CTN Board Chair, who shared the organization’s vision and mission, underscoring CTN’s global commitment to strengthening churches worldwide.
A key highlight of the consultation was Rev. Dr. Master’s presentation of preliminary research findings:
67% of church leaders indicated they have adequate biblical knowledge.
52% reported consistently preaching sound doctrine.
While encouraging, these findings also served as a wake-up call. Rev. Dr. Master, AEA Secretary General, emphasized the urgent need for training and mentorship, warning that many new believers risk falling away without strong pastoral guidance. Acts 20:28 was cited to remind leaders of their sacred responsibility to “feed the flock of God.”
The consultation also addressed challenges posed by independence without accountability, where some leaders avoid training or collaboration—an approach deemed harmful to the broader Christian community. Participants stressed that pastoral training should focus on practical equipping rather than merely earning certificates, ensuring leaders are prepared to shepherd God’s people effectively.
The three-day workshop concluded with a call for greater synergy among churches, mission organizations, and partners, aiming to ensure that Africa’s churches are equipped, supported, and mobilized for global mission. AEA and its partners will soon release a full report detailing the outcomes of the consultation.
